It’s a tale as old as time: a beautiful young woman marries the prince. But basing a relationship on fairy tales doesn’t always work out, as Princess Diana’s adulterous, unhappy marriage with Prince Charles demonstrated. As the more recent case of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith shows, a romantic relationship with the wrong person can ruin your life.

Recent crime statistics also show that women are most likely to be killed by their current or ex partners. However, regardless of gender, dating violence can have detrimental effects on a victim’s mental and physical health, as well as academic performance. With these high stakes, it is vital that people do not choose the wrong partners to be in a relationship with. Thus, let me tell you about the red flags to look out for in a potential romantic partner. The red flags are split into 3 broad categories:

  1. Past behavioural history
  2. Present behaviour towards others
  3. Present behaviour towards you

Past history of behaviour

Although people can change past behaviour is usually a good indicator of future behaviour.

  1. Violence and abuse towards exes
